The 1st Kansas Colored Infantry and the American Civil War Collections of the Museum of World Treasures
Many of us trace our knowledge of African American Union soldiers and their service in the Civil War back to the 1989 motion picture “Glory” that featured Denzel Washington, Morgan Freeman, and Matthew Broderick telling the story of the >54th Massachusetts Infantry Regiment. Without stealing the “glory” from the 54th Massachusetts, the First Regiment Kansas Colored Infantry has their own story to tell that never made it to Hollywood. The Museum of World Treasures displays an artifact with provenance that travels back to the Honey Springs Battlefield in July 1863 near Checotah, Oklahoma and the 1st Kansas Colored Infantry.
SPEAKER BIO – Bruce Fritz
Bruce has taught US and World History at local 2-year and 4-year colleges for nearly twenty years. He and his son Andrew have volunteered at MOWT for over four years now and enjoy working with the MOWT team to fulfill the Museum’s mission through the first and second floor “Small Stories” exhibits. Bruce’s current/personal historical interests are focused on Kansas History as told through its cemeteries.
